What is an APO/FPO address?

An APO/FPO address is a special U.S. Postal Service address that delivers mail to service members stationed outside the United States at domestic shipping rates.

APO stands for Army Post Office and FPO stands for Fleet Post Office. The Military Postal Service Agency assigns these designations so that mail bound for overseas bases travels through the same U.S. Postal Service network as domestic mail. A package addressed to an APO/FPO address is priced like a shipment to any U.S. state, which is why military families can receive orders without international shipping fees.

The system dates back to 1918, when the Army established its own postal network during World War I. Today it serves more than 200,000 deployed and permanently stationed personnel at any time. APO, FPO, and DPO: what each prefix means

APO is used by Army and Air Force units, FPO by Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard units, and DPO by diplomatic posts.

The prefix does not change how your order is priced or tracked; it only tells the Postal Service which gateway handles the mail. The table below shows the three designations and the regions they typically cover.

How to format a military postal address

Write the recipient name, unit and box number, then the city line "APO" or "FPO" with a two-letter AE/AP/AA code and a 5- or 9-digit ZIP code.

The address must not include the host country, because the package is carried by the U.S. Postal Service all the way to the unit mail room. This method does NOT apply to couriers like FedEx or UPS, which generally do not deliver to military post offices. A correctly formatted example looks like this:

The state codes map to regions: AE covers Europe, the Middle East, and Africa; AP covers the Pacific; AA covers the Americas. The ZIP code always starts with 09 or 34, which routes the parcel through the military mail gateways in New York, Chicago, or San Francisco.
