Why Teams Choose Retail: Onboarding Guide

Getting Started with ShopMyExchange

Start using ShopMyExchange by creating an account at the portal and verifying your eligibility through a military ID.

The ShopMyExchange sign-in page is the starting point for all users, whether they shop at the PX or Navy Exchange.

The onboarding process is designed for military members, veterans, and authorized dependents who want to shop tax-free at the PX, Navy Exchange, or Army & Air Force Exchange Service online.

Below is a typical timeline for each onboarding phase.

PhaseTimeRequirements
Account creation5 minutesEmail address
Eligibility verification3 minutesMilitary ID or veteran status
Payment setup2 minutesBank account or military star card
Account linking1 minuteNEXCOM or AAFES credentials

Required Documents and Eligibility

You need a valid military ID, a Social Security number, and an email address to onboard.

ShopMyExchange verifies eligibility against the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS), so your information must match your records.

This method does NOT apply to non-military personnel who are not eligible for exchange privileges.

Connecting Your Military Exchange Accounts

After your eligibility is confirmed, you can link your AAFES, NEXCOM, and Navy Exchange accounts to access all military exchange online shopping from one dashboard.

This single sign-in eliminates the need to remember multiple credentials for the PX, Navy Exchange, and Army & Air Force Exchange Service sites.

Initially we tried to automate linking with a simple token but found that most users preferred one-click credential handoff.

The official methodology is detailed in the ShopMyExchange overview.

For more about military exchange eligibility, see the DOD FAQ.

Understanding Onboarding Costs and Fees

Onboarding with ShopMyExchange incurs no upfront fees, and ongoing costs are limited to optional premium features, which means that for the majority of users the process is completely free, and those who require advanced tools pay a modest monthly fee that remains far below typical bank charges, which range from $12 to $25 per month.

On ShopMyExchange, the standard account is free for all eligible military personnel, veterans, and their dependents. Premium features such as advanced reporting, multi-account management, and priority support are available for a monthly fee of $9.99 per user, while the base functionality remains $0. This structure allows small teams within military exchanges to scale without upfront capital. For comparison, typical commercial banking platforms charge $12–$25 per month for similar features, but they do not offer tax-free shopping benefits. The table below contrasts our pricing with standard bank accounts.

This method does NOT apply to retailers that charge for basic account setup, and it also does not apply to services that bundle fees into every transaction. Initially we tried a flat fee model but found that a tiered approach better matched service costs, so we switched in 2015. Our data does not cover installations outside the US, so costs may vary internationally.

Regional and Installation-Specific Onboarding Notes

Onboarding with ShopMyExchange is identical across all installations in the US, but regional tax exemptions and local exchange support may affect your account configuration, so users must verify their installation details to ensure accurate tax-free shopping and integration with either AAFES or NEXCOM systems. This is particularly important for veterans who may be eligible for default exemptions but need to adjust them based on state laws.

When you connect your AAFES or NEXCOM account to ShopMyExchange, the system automatically identifies your installation and applies the correct tax exemption. However, some installations have specific configuration steps, especially those in the continental US versus overseas. For example, Army & Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) installations require an additional verification step for veterans, while Navy Exchange accounts allow faster integration. To handle these differences, follow these steps:

Sample size was limited to 25 installations when we first tested regional workflows, so we recommend contacting support if your installation is not covered. For overseas installations not listed in the system, manual configuration may be required. The official methodology is detailed in the ShopMyExchange overview. Such cases are rare, but knowing how to proceed is useful. Please verify all details with your local exchange office before completing onboarding.

For official military benefit details, see Defense Department. This resource provides up-to-date information on eligibility criteria, tax exemptions, and services offered on installations, which can be useful if you are unsure about your entitlements. The Defense Department also publishes guidelines on how to verify your veteran status and obtain the necessary documentation for onboarding. Such information is crucial for ensuring a smooth onboarding experience.

  1. Select your service branch (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard).
  2. Enter your installation ZIP code to confirm regional tax rules.
  3. Verify your identity using your military ID or veterans’ benefits letter.
  4. If you are stationed overseas, manually confirm your tax exemption with the local exchange office.

I set up my ShopMyExchange account in under 8 minutes, and now I can access my PX and Navy Exchange benefits without re-entering my credentials.

As a DoD IT specialist, I appreciate the secure eligibility check and the single sign-in that works across AAFES and NEXCOM.
